BVTKD Director and 6th Dan
Black Belt Instructor - Master David Johnson
Thank you for taking time to research our school! There are so many martial
art schools in the Kansas City area that choosing the "right"
one seems a daunting task.
We are here to tell you that the
decision is in fact quite simple. The Blue Valley Tae Kwon Do Academy
(BVTKD) has a history in Southern Johnson County. Opened in 1995 by Master David Johnson,
the school grows with each passing year turning dedicated students into martial
artists.
Master David Johnson, a 6th
Dan Black Belt, has more than 30 years experience in Tae Kwon Do adult and
child instruction. His philosophy of teaching builds
self-confidence and self esteem. Students will not only learn the
physical side of self-defense:
Flexibility
Speed Power Balance
but also the mental side:
Focus
Concentration Confidence
BVTKD teaches Tae Kwon Do as "A
Way of Life." Students learn the 5 Tenants:
Courtesy Integrity
Perseverance
Self-Control
Indomitable Spirit
Master Johnson believes that once
these life skills are learned, students will find balance and
can achieve anything in life.
Master Johnson was trained under
one of only a handful of Grandmasters in the United States teaching
Tae Kwon Do, Grandmaster Choon Lee. Master Lee is a 9th Dan
Grandmaster who came to the United States in the 1960's.
Master Lee began the organization called American Korean Tae Kwon Do
Association (AKTA) that is still going strong today. The
parent school in Shawnee, Kansas called Choon Lee's Academy of Tae
Kwon Do is where Master Johnson began training in the 1970's.
He was one of Grandmaster Lee's first students and 30 years later is
proud to carry on the tradition. Grandmaster Lee oversees his
AKTA-sanctioned schools in Shawnee, KS; Overland Park, KS; Kansas
City, KS; Lawrence, KS; Raytown, MO;

Tae Kwon Do:
A Korean martial art whose roots date back to the
6th Century (approximately 1300 years ago). Translated
literally, "Tae" means to kick or smash with the foot, "Kwon" means
to punch or destroy with the hand or fist, and "Do" means an art or
way. Thus, taken collectively, "Tae Kwon Do" means the art of
smashing with the hand or foot.
Hapkido:
A "way of coordinating power." Hapkido,
which is also offered by BVTKD, is a
Korean martial art characterized by kicking without
retraction and is composed of three primary skills:
non-resistance when meeting force, circular motion
to countering and attacking, and the water principle
- total penetration of an enemy's defenses.
Hapkido forces submission of your attacker through
defensive means.
